Which tools do I need to finish my projects?

Are you planning on renovating your home yourself? You probably don’t want to buy too many tools you won’t really need in the end. Some tools do however belong in every DIY enthusiast’s basic tool collection. But which ones?

You can of course do almost every job by hand, like sanding down wooden surfaces. But manual labour has one big disadvantage: it is very time-consuming. Luckily, there are plenty of convenient power tools that don’t cost a fortune and get the job done easier, faster and more precise.

Which power tools are essential?

First of all: a drill driver. This is a vital tool that helps you to drive in screws, as well as drill holes in softer materials. Therefore, it is a staple in toolboxes of any trade. If you need to drill into harder materials like stone or concrete frequently, a hammer drill is the more suitable choice.

Another essential addition to your toolbox: a circular saw. With it, you can make long, straight cuts in large wooden boards of all kinds. It is also an ideal tool for sawing laminate, baseboards and wooden frames.

Last but not least, an angle grinder is also an essential tool for every serious DIY-er. It can be used for cutting through stone and metal, as well as to deburr metal surfaces. It is also an ideal tool if you need to make small grooves in walls and floors.

When buying a drill driver, hammer drill, circular saw and angle grinder, you have nowadays the choice between cordless and regular versions. Because of modern battery technologies, the cordless tools offer as much power as corded power tools, while also offering you almost limitless freedom.

Which tool should I choose?

A rule of thumb when choosing a cordless drill is: the higher the voltage, the more powerful the tool will be. For lighter tasks, a 12V drill driver suffices. For heavier jobs, we recommend a 18V – 20V tool. That is also the minimum voltage for a cordless hammer drill. When choosing a hammer drill, its impact force, expressed in joules, is an important factor. The higher the number of joules, the more forceful it can drill in concrete.

One of the most important aspects of a circular saw is its maximum cutting depth. Some models may offer a cutting depth of 55mm, while others can cut through up to 65mm thick boards. When you choose a cordless tool, make sure it has a voltage of at least 18V. A laser is a practical feature that can help you reach a more precise result.

If you consider buying an angle grinder, take the disc diameter into account. An angle grinder with a cutting disc of Ø115mm is perfectly suitable for a large number of smaller tasks. To ensure plenty of power, a cordless one should have at least 18V or more. A smaller grinder offers the advantage of being easily handleable and perfectly manoeuvrable. This ensures that you have the needed control, especially when the device is also equipped with a soft start motor.

Which tools can I rent?

The short answer would be: all possible power tools. But if it is sensible to do so, depends on how frequently you are planning on using it. If you need to use it frequently, it is cheaper to buy it. Additionally, the tool will always be right there when you need it. However, if you need that tool only on rare occasions, it might be cheaper renting it. This will also free you from having to maintain it and find a space to store it.

Here are some examples of tools that are rented frequently: floor polishers, pumps, concrete mixers, tower wagons, trailers and more.
