How to build your own coffee table

Looking for a unique coffee table to match your personality and the rest of your interior? Just build it yourself! A real eye catcher you won't find anywhere else.

The trouble with choosing a new coffee table is that so many models look alike. You can spend weeks scrolling through websites and browsing furniture stores, searching for one that truly stands out, often with little success. And if you finally do find one, you’ll soon realise it’s not as unique as you’d hoped.

As a seasoned DIYer, you’ll quickly come to the conclusion: that unique coffee table? I’d better make it myself. Luckily, there’s plenty of inspiration online. From tables crafted out of old tree trunks, to designs made from pallets, or rustic versions built with reclaimed beams. But how can you be sure all your effort will lead to great results? By following our plan, of course!

Get out your mitre saw

Before you begin your project, make sure to gather the right power tools. First up: a mitre saw, perfect for cutting boards and battens to length. It’s a stable and precise tool, because you simply lower the blade while the machine stays firmly in place on its stand.

A telescopic mitre saw is always practical. It allows you to cut much wider pieces, because you pull the blade towards you before making the cut.

Now, why would you choose a Powerplus mitre saw? Well, because of the many different options, of course: telescopic, with dust extraction, and – also very useful – a laser guide, plus an extendable material stop with clamping system. We offer plenty of different features for a very reasonable price.

And your drill/screwdriver

When building your own coffee table, you’ll be using plenty of screws. Use a combination drill/screwdriver to make your life easier.

Looking for a new model? Go for cordless, so you don't have to deal with cables that get in the way. For lighter projects, a 12 V battery tends to be enough. But if you want something more versatile, opt for a slightly more powerful version, 18 to 20 V, capable of driving screws into both wood and metal.

Stain it

Not because your table needs to be weatherproof, but to really bring out the beauty of the wood. Always apply the stain following the grain, and immediately wipe away any drips. It’s best to apply two coats. Make sure the first coat is fully dry, and give it a light sanding before applying the second coat. This way, the second layer goes on smoothly without any tackiness. Now, let’s get started!
